when you rub your eyes, you see things you can’t describe
________________

when you rub your eyes, you see things you can’t describe is a new album by Polish, Cologne-based composer Szymon Wójcik.

Out on 16 January 2026 via Sawyer Editions, the record emerges from an exploration of liminal zones of harmony—spaces where the traditional Western divide between major and minor becomes blurred or disappears entirely.

Working with just intonation as a structural anchor, Wójcik creates sound worlds that merge contemporary composition with the expressive contours of left-field pop. This approach is shaped through close collaboration with vocalist Sara Flindt, whose intuitive, open-ended practice allows the precisely tuned harmonies to expand into more expressive and unpredictable territories.

The album features five compositions, in which wind and string instruments, voice, guitars, pipe organ, and the ARP 2500 synthesizer blend to form a unified, complex sonic world....

Sara Flindt - voice (tracks: 1, 2, 3, 4)

Amalie Dahl - alto saxophone (3, 4, 5)

Ferdinand Schwarz - trumpet (4, 5)

Lorenzo Colocci - bass flute (3, 4, 5)

Oskar Tomala - prepared clarinet (3)

Victor Fox - tenor saxophone (2)

Philip Hayduk - trombone (2)

Rasmus Svale Kjærgård Lund - tuba (4, 5)

Emily Wittbrodt - cello (4, 5)

Rafał Różalski - double bass (3, 4)

Jan Philipp - drums (4)

Szymon Wójcik - ARP 2500 (2, 3), guitars (1, 3, 4), pipe organ (2)

untitled#287 (for organ, tuned oscillators and 3d audio system)
________________

	PL:

ENG:“untitled#287” is an electroacoustic piece for pipe organ and tuned oscillators, created specifically for a 3D audio system. The organ was recorded using nine microphones (some of them placed inside the instrument) to capture the most spatial sound image possible and — through subsequent spatialization — transport listeners into the interior of the instrument.

Listen to the piece in a binaural mix within a dedicated 3D graphic environment here (listen in headphones):https://www.nievesdelafuentegutierrez.com/Szymon/index.html

.The work was created as part of a scholarship program that I have been carrying out since October 2025, entitled “Sound Space as a Compositional Material – Consultations with Specialists and the Realization of a Work Using Object-Based Audio Technology.”
The scholarship was funded by the European Union under the NextGenerationEU program.

the snake that eats its own tail (for cello, bass clarinet, tuba and tuned oscillators)
_________________

the snake that eats its own tail emerges from my ongoing exploration of harmonic worlds where the Western dichotomy between major and minor modes begins to dissolve. Composed entirely in 11-limit just intonation—a tuning system based on the natural harmonic series that allows for intervals expressed as whole-number ratios—the piece invites listeners into a space where familiar tonal reference points become blurred.
Performed by
Carl Rosman – bass clarinet, Dirk Wietheger – cello, Maxime Morel – tuba, Carlos Lopes – oscillators;world premiere of the piece: June 27, 2025, Studio of Ensemble Musikfabrik, Cologne (DE)

The piece explores the harmonic possibilities of the organ at Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne. This organ is special due to its exceptional number of registers known as "mutation stops," which allow for the creation of intervals tuned as ratios of whole numbers.

The piece premiered on November 21, 2024, at Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne (DE) as part of the Orgel-Mixturen 2024 festival.

‘what did you forget that you want the future to remember’ for ARP 2500 (work in progress)
_________________
‘what did you forget that you want the future to remember’ is a result of a months spent experimenting with the legendary ARP 2500 synthesizer. The main focus of the research was the”human” features of the machine as well as traces of a passing time. At the moment the result is a study in harmony and repetition, exploring boarders between linear and non-linear composition aspects with a heightened focus on just intonation and beating interference patterns.

Part of the research was presented at GKG Bonn in July 2023; Comissioned by Strom : Klänge —exhibition at the Gesellschaft für Kunst und Gestaltung Bonn.

The main assumption underlying rasp music are contrasts, oxymorons, combining elements that are far apart from each other, creating constant tension between formation and desintegration of sound structures and exploring the boundaries between noise and conventional music. Their debut album “Romantic Alternative Schizophrenic Punk” was released on 26th October 2019 on Howard Records.
